International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation

Invest in youth, both boys and girls, through training and information, in order to reach the objective of zero tolerance to female genital mutilation by the year 2030

PRESS RELEASE

In February 2003, the Inter-African Committee on traditional practices affecting the health of women and children (IAC) closed, in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, an important international conference on female genital mutilation entitled: International conference on zero tolerance to female genital mutilation.

During this conference, the 6^th February, date of the creation of the Inter-African Committee, was proposed by IAC and accepted by the United Nations as the International Day of Zero Tolerance to Female Genital Mutilation.

This 6^th February 2020 thus marks the 17^th International day of zero tolerance to female genital mutilation, during which the whole world should reaffirm strongly and with determination its firm commitment to the noble struggle for the total elimination, by 2030, of these practices which constitute a serious and flagrant violation of the rights of women and girls.

It is important to stress that wherever this practice exists it is steadily decreasing, thus showing the rejection of this plague by the new generation.

This is why the effective involvement of adolescents and youth (girls and boys, attending school or not) in this struggle should receive as an essential support an in-depth knowledge of these practices, i.e. their origins, background, consequences, strategies and, above all, the actions to be undertaken in order to prevent and combat them.

For this, the Inter-African Committee urgently appeals to all its partners (communities, regional and international organizations, civil society and non-governmental organizations, religious organizations, women and men of good will) to support the training and information of adolescents and youth in a synergy of action.

For its part, the Inter-African Committee will continue, as it has been doing for the last 36 years, to hold the torch high in order to illuminate the difficult and winding road that will inexorably lead to a world without female genital mutilation by the year 2030. It is unacceptable to let 68 million girls be submitted to this tragic practice in violation of their rights and their physical and psychological integrity.

Together we will defeat the practice of female genital mutilation.

Journée internationale Tolérance Zéro aux mutilations génitales féminines

Thème :

Investir dans les adolescents, filles et garçons, à travers la formation et l’information, afin d’assurer l’atteinte de l’objectif tolérance zéro aux mutilations génitales féminines en 2030. 

En février 2003, le Comité Inter-Africain sur les pratiques traditionnelles ayant effet sur la santé des femmes et des enfants (CI-AF) clôturait à Addis Abéba en Éthiopie, une importante conférence internationale sur les mutilations génitales féminines avec pour titre : conférence internationale Tolérance Zéro aux mutilations génitales féminines.

Au cours de cette conférence, le 6 février, date de la création du Comité Inter-Africain, a été proposé par le CI-AF et accepté par les Nations Unies comme Journée internationale Tolérance Zéro aux mutilations génitales féminines.

Ce 6 février 2020 marque donc la 17^ème Journée internationale Tolérance Zéro aux mutilations génitales féminines au cours de laquelle le monde entier devra réaffirmer avec force et détermination son engagement total dans la noble lutte pour l’élimination totale d’ici en 2030 de ces pratiques qui constituent une violation grave et flagrante des droits des filles et des femmes.

Il est important de souligner que, partout dans le monde où la pratique existe, elle est en régression, dénotant ainsi le rejet de ce fléau par les nouvelles générations.

C’est pourquoi, l’implication effective des adolescents et des jeunes (filles et garçons, scolarisés et non scolarisés) dans cette lutte, doit avoir pour support indispensable, la connaissance approfondie de ces pratiques, à savoir leurs origines, fondements, conséquences, stratégies, et surtout les actions à mener pour les prévenir et les combattre.

À cet effet, le Comité Inter-Africain lance un appel pressant à tous les partenaires et parties prenantes (communautés, gouvernements, organisations régionales et internationales, organisations de la société civile et non gouvernementales, organisations religieuses, femmes et hommes de bonne volonté) afin qu’ils appuient la formation et l’information des adolescents et jeunes dans une synergie d’action.

Pour sa part, le Comité Inter-Africain continuera, comme il le fait depuis 36 ans, à tenir le flambeau pour éclairer la difficile et sinueuse route qui mènera inexorablement à un monde sans mutilations génitales féminines d’ici à l’an 2030, car il est inacceptable de laisser 68 millions de filles, subir cette tragique pratique en violation de leurs droits et à toute leur intégrité physique et psychologique.

Ensemble nous vaincrons les mutilations génitales féminines.
